The Cherubs of Venus by (Brean Leslie) Douglas Newton

In summer pigeons bumble in the eaves
And all Trafalgar Square’s a pigeon-cote;
And every pigeon lets a feather loose,
A flake – to float
Down, down,
Till with a quilt, the birds have blessed the town.

Winter, the pigeons crumple like the leaves;
(The Southern to the Northern Venus yields)
Their feathers comfort them, they spare no more:
And only snowflakes fall, confetti for
The weddings at St. Martin’s-in-the Fields.
