First They Came by Martin Niemöller

First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me.

  1. This piece sums up Niemöller’s metanoia. He had been originally one of the church leaders who was supportive of the Nazis because of their opposition to communism. Little by little Niemöller began to realise what was happening and took a brave stand against them, regretting that he had not done so sooner. A brave and honest man.
